MORRISTOWN, NJ (August 19, 2014) – Sky Blue FC forward Nadia Nadim has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 19 of the 2014 NWSL season.
Nadim, 26, had two goals – including the game-winning goal in the 89th minute – and added an assist to lead Sky Blue FC to a 3-2 victory Wednesday over the Western New York Flash. (Watch Highlights)
The Afghanistan-born Denmark international has enjoyed a spectacular stretch in the NWSL while on loan from Danish club Fortuna Hjørring. She now has seven goals in just six games (five starts) to go along with three assists since she joined the club June 18 and has been a major factor in helping coach Jim Gabarra’s side to four consecutive victories.
Nadim assisted on a goal by Kelley O’Hara in the 24th minute against Western New York when she steered a cross from forward Maya Hayes toward the far post for the U.S. international to slot home as Sky Blue FC tied the game at 1-1 off the ensuing kickoff after conceding the opening goal of the game.
Nadim then gave SBFC a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute when she was first to the rebound after Flash goalkeeper Kelsey Wys saved a shot from the top of the box by O’Hara.
Then with the game tied 2-2 in the 89th minute, Nadim netted the game-winning goal after she raced onto a through ball from midfielder Katy Freels and went around a charging Wys with her first touch before sliding the ball into an open net to give Sky Blue FC all three points.
This marks the second time this season and fifth-time overall that a Sky Blue FC player has been voted NWSL Player of the Week – with forward Kelley O’Hara claiming the award in Week 7 of this season and goalkeeper Brittany Cameron, defender Christie Rampone and forward Lisa De Vanna earning the honor with SBFC in 2013.
Sky Blue FC will return to action Wednesday, August 20, at 7 p.m. ET against the Houston Dash at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
