Sky Blue FC Signs Goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe

U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team Netminder Heading to New Jersey

Morristown, N.J. (Thursday, October 9, 2014) – Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) officially announced on Thursday that the team has signed U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe as a discovery player. The former Wake Forest University standout also brings professional experience to the New Jersey side, coming to Sky Blue FC upon completion of a season with Idrettsklubben Grand Bodø of the Norwegian League.

“During our scouting for last year’s college draft, we had Aubrey ranked really high at the goalkeeper position,” Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra said of Bledsoe. “At that time, we did not really have a need with both Jill (Loyden) and Britt (Cameron) coming back, and she ended up playing abroad in Europe for a year. We were looking for someone to challenge for a number one spot and believe Aubrey fills that need.”

While playing at Wake Forest University, Bledsoe was named an NSCAA All-American following her final three years of college, twice receiving third team honors before being named to the second team following her senior season. The Ohio native ranks second all-time in NCAA Division 1 history with 8,692 minutes played, and her 33 shutouts, 0.91 Goals Against Average and 94 games played are all program records at Wake Forest.

“Aubrey has all of the tools,” Gabarra remarked. “She has the size, and she is very good with her feet. She had a very successful college career and a good year in the Norwegian League. We fully expect to see that success follow her to Sky Blue FC.”

Highly durable with good shot-stopping ability, Bledsoe was considered by many analysts to be the top goalkeeper available in the 2014 NWSL College Draft. Goalkeeping is certainly in the Bledsoe bloodline as well, as Aubrey’s twin sister, Amber, had a standout college career herself while backstopping Brown University.

Bledsoe looks to immediately be in the mix at the goalkeeper position for Sky Blue FC, with former netminder Jill Loyden announcing earlier this week that she has decided to retire from professional soccer.
