Sky Blue FC Opens Preseason with Win Against St. John’s University

Howell, N.J. (March 16, 2019) – Sky Blue FC began its 2019 preseason play on Saturday afternoon at Sportika Sports. The New Jersey team netted six goals to clinch the victory, while holding the Red Storm scoreless.

“We’ve been playing a lot of 11v11 in training, so I think that is maybe why we felt a little more comfortable when we got here today,” Head Coach Denise Reddy said. “It was great, I thinkeveryone enjoyed it. We set out wanting to accomplish some attacking goals and I think we over accomplished them. Of course, there is always improvements to be made and we are looking forward to getting better each week.”

In her first starting XI of 2019, Reddy rolled out a 4-4-2 with Canada National Team Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan anchoring the team in the back. Newly-acquired defenders Caprice Dydasco and Estelle Johnson saw their first start as members of Sky Blue and rookies Paige Monaghan and Julie James got the call for their first professional start.

The match saw four different goal scorers with U.S. WNT forward Carli Lloyd leading the way by tallying a brace. In her professional debut, Monaghan opened scoring for Sky Blue with a rocket of a goal in the 12th minute. 2018 NWSL Rookie of the Year Imani Dorsey doubled the lead with a goal of her own in the 23rd minute. Just 10 minutes later veteran forward Jen Hoy slipped a cheeky shot in past the goalkeeper to give the team a 3-0 lead.

Just shy of the second half, Lloyd played a hand in two more Sky Blue goals, blasting one intothe back of the net in the 41st minute and assisting on Monaghan’s second professional goal inthe 45th. Sky Blue rounded out scoring in the 65th minute when Lloyd brought the ball down the left side of the field before sending it sailing into goal.

Sky Blue continues preseason play next Saturday, March 23 when the Club takes on West Virginia at Sportika Sports in Manalapan. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. ET. For entrance into the game please RSVP online at skybluefc.com/schedule.

The club’s first official league match will be played on April 13 against the Washington Spirit at Maryland SoccerPlex and the home opener will take place on Saturday, April 20, at 6 p.m. ET against the Houston Dash at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers.
