Hoy’s Stoppage Time Heroics Lifts Sky Blue FC Over Utah Royals FC

Piscataway, N.J. (July 12, 2019) – Sky Blue FC (2-7-2, 8 points) stayed aggressive throughout the course of the match to bring home a win off of a goal by Jen Hoy in a stoppage time thriller.

In the 4th minute, Sky Blue started off their attack after a deflected shot made its way to the head of Erica Skroski. The initial shot by Julie James Doyle clipped off Utah defender Becca Moros’s leg, falling to the head of Skroski who flicked it towards the near post but was saved by the diving Nicole Barnhart.

The second chance on goal came in the 11th minute as Elizabeth Eddy slipped the ball through to Imani Dorsey, who fired off a shot just wide of the left post. Royals shot back with a few attacks on goal between the 17th and 23rd minute but nothing to show for it.

The Royals big chance of the first half came in the 28th minute from the foot of forward Amy Rodriguez. A ball sent in over the top of the Sky Blue backline put Rodriguez in space to fire off a shot but was denied by the left post.

The first half finished with Utah keeping most of the possession and two more back to back chances on goal. In the 43rd minute a shot by Utah forward Erika Tymrak deflected off Skorski for a corner kick. From the corner, Tymrak sent in the ball to the head of defender Gaby Vincent, who sent it over the post.

Determined in the second half, Sky Blue continued their offensive strike onto Utah’s backline. In the 52nd minute, Raquel Rodriguez played the ball off to Eddy, putting her into open space at the top of the box, and rifled off a shot towards the left side of the goal, but Barnhart pushed it wide for the save.

In the 54th minute Caprice Dydasco saw open space and slipped in a pass to Dorsey, as she turned to goal and took the low shot, defender Rachel Corsie cleared it out but was dangerously close to an own goal.

Utah’s final chance on goal game in the 89th minute as Dydasco played a ball back to Kailen Sheridan as Rodriguez was running at full speed and almost picked it off. The collision in the box with Sheridan ended that attack with a foul called on Rodriguez.

As the clock was ticking down in stoppage time, Sarah Killion found the open Jen Hoy who sped at the backline, burned her defender with a cut right, and curled the shot into the back of the net to seal the deal, making the scoreline 1-0 and securing their first win of the year at home and second win of the season.

“I think everyone is playing free and allowing their best qualities to shine through,” said forward Jen Hoy. “We all just believe in each other one-hundred percent, not like we didn’t before, but we are taking it to a whole new level. I know energetically I can feel it out there, I think everyone can feel it from all of us to the fans.”

Sky Blue will be away at Orlando on Saturday, July 20 at Exploria Stadium, against Orlando Pride at 7:30 p.m. ET. A few days later Sky Blue will return home for the club’s World Cup Return Night to face the Washington Spirit on Wednesday, July 24th at 7:30 p.m. ET at Yurcak Field.
