Sky Blue FC falls 3-0 to Utah Royals FC at Rio Tinto Stadium

Sandy, Utah (August 7, 2019) – Sky Blue FC (2-11-3, 9 points) falls 3-0 to Utah Royals FC at Rio Tinto Stadium from a brace by Christen Press and a goal by Amy Rodriguez.

Sky Blue started off on their front foot pressing hard. They earned the first corner of the match in the 6th minute but the kick taken by Sarah Killion fell short and was cleared out. In the 8th minute, a chance at goal came from a lofted ball sent into the box by Imani Dorsey, and Killion was just inches short from getting a head on it as she collided with Utah goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

Kailen Sheridan was called into action in the 13th minute to stop a shot on goal by Utah forward Christen Press. Utah midfielder Vero Boquete threaded a pass into space behind the Sky Blue backline to Press, who collected on the left side of the box and ripped a shot at the near post but was denied by Sheridan.

Caprice Dydasco was left unmarked in open space inside Utah’s box as Elizabeth Eddy sent a pass into her in the 19th minute. Before Utah was able to recover, Dydasco fired a shot off toward the far-left post but sent it wide for a goal kick.

Estelle Johnson came up big in the 24th minute to keep Utah off the board. Utah Defender Katie Bowen went to save a ball from going out on the right sideline and just got a foot on it to send the ball into the box to Amy Rodriguez. In open space, Rodriguez cut back to her left and quickly ripped a shot off but was blocked by Johnson who just made it over in time to deny her.

Utah found the back of the net in the 27th and 29th minute from the foot of Press to make it 2-0. Midfielder Lo’eau LoBonta was running full speed down the middle of the field at the backline and found the feet of Press after the pass took a slight deflection off of Erica Skroski. Sheridan came off her line to try and block the shot, but Press was able to find the back of the net for the first goal. Two minutes later, LoBonta was out on the right side near the endline when she sent a cross into the box and connected with Press running at goal. With one touch, Press sent the shot into the left corner of the net past the diving Sheridan to put Utah up 2-0.

In the 48th minute, Utah scored their final goal of the match from the feet of Rodriguez. Utah forward Mallory Weber was running down the left side of the field when she saw Rodriguez cut in towards the penalty spot. With a quick pass in, Rodriguez took a one-touch shot and hit the ball past the outstretched Sheridan to make it 3-0.

Utah continued to pressure Sky Blue’s backline but Sheridan continued to deny them. In the 54th minute Weber took it upon herself to take a low shot at goal that was heading towards the left corner, but Sheridan was able to get a hand on the ball and tip it out. In the 63rd minute, LoBonta was sitting in space at the top of the box and fired a shot off but Sheridan jumped up and collected it. Press found her way in on goal again in the 75th minute and fired a low shot off toward the far-right post but Sheridan just got a hand on it.  Sheridan denied Press one more time in the 85th minute as Boquette played her in on goal. As Press collected the ball in front of goal, Sheridan came off her line and made a point-blank kick save to stop Press from adding another one to the scoresheet.

The last attempt for Utah came in the 87th minute and was stopped by Dorsey. Press got past Sheridan, who came off her line to dive on the ball and sent a shot in on the goal but Dorsey running at full speed got to the goal line to block the shot.
