Match Preview | Sky Blue FC vs North Carolina Courage

Howell, NJ (September 6, 2019) – Sky Blue FC (4-11-4, 16 points) returns home to Yurcak Field for a 3:00 p.m. ET match against the North Carolina Courage (9-4-4, 31 points) on Saturday, September 7th. This is the second meeting of the season between the two teams. Sky blue FC is coming off a 2-1 win against the Houston Dash on August 24thand a 1-1 draw to Reign FC on August 18th.

Preview

Sky Blue FC sits in eighth place with a record of 4-11-4 and 16 points. The Courage sit in second place with a record of 9-4-4 and 31 points. North Carolina has gone undefeated in their last five matches against Sky Blue with three wins and two draws. However, Sky Blue has been in good home form in their most recent matches with two wins, one draw, and one loss. 

Sky Blue keeper Kailen Sheridan has been having a standout season. Among keepers with a minimum of 10 games played, Sheridan leads the league in both save percentage (80.3%) and total saves (65). She’s also won Save of the Week 3 times and was named to July’s NWSL Team of the Month.

Seven Sky Blue FC players have found the back of the net this season. Carli Lloyd leads the club with four goals and one assist. Two of Lloyd’s goals came in a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash in Sky Blue’s last match. Raquel Rodriguez follows Lloyd with three goals and two assists. Imani Dorsey (two goals), Jen Hoy (two goals, one assist), Paige Monaghan (two goals, one assist) Sarah Killion (one goal, two assists), and Elizabeth Eddy (one goal, one assist) have contributed to the Sky Blue attack as well. 

Opponent

The Courage are coming off a 1-0 win against Reign FC at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. Lynn Williams scored the winning goal to lead the Courage to victory over the Reign. Williams has seven goals and five assists this season. She is the only player with more than 10 combined goals and assists in each of the last four seasons. 

Last season, North Carolina climbed their way to the top by going unbeaten on the road. Even though the Courage currently sit in second place, they have lost four games on the road this season. The road struggles appear to stem from finishing in the final third. The Courage are averaging 0.6 fewer goals per game this year than last.

Another two players to watch on the Courage are Kristen Hamilton and Crystal Dunn. Hamilton is having a breakout year, leading the team with eight goals and three assists. Dunn follows closely behind with a total of five goals and two assists in only seven appearances this season. 

Sky Blue FC vs. North Carolina Courage Rewind 

The two teams last played each other at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park on May 4th. Sky Blue held North Carolina scoreless in a 0-0 draw; the second time in their history they kept the Courage scoreless. 

Looking ahead

Sky Blue will be home at Yurcak Field on September 15thfor the club’s Petpalooza Day to face the Chicago Red Stars at 5 p.m. ET. This will be the third meeting of the season for the two teams. Their last matchup ended in a 2-1 win for Sky Blue FC at home.
