Lloyd nets her eighth goal of the season, Richardson scores her first NWSL goal, & Sheridan finishes season with 86 saves
Cary, N.C. (October 12, 2019) – Sky Blue FC (5-14-5, 20 points) fell 3-2 in a battle with the 2019 NWSL Shield Winners North Carolina Courage at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. Carli Lloyd netted her eighth goal of the season in the 26th minute and Domi Richardson scored her first NWSL career goal in the 86th minute.
Carli Lloyd looked to continue her scoring streak in the 9th minute of play as she collected a poor back pass by Courage defender Abby Dahlkemper. Sprinting down the left flank towards goal, Lloyd went one-on-one with goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland, and tried to slip the ball past her but was denied by a kick save
Sky Blue’s first corner of the match came in the 14th minute with captain Sarah Killion standing over the ball. Killion sent the ball towards Lloyd, who put a powerful header on frame but was caught by Rowland.
North Carolina got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute with a goal from forward Jessica McDonald. Courage midfielder McCall Zerboni sent a through ball into McDonald, whose initial shot was blocked by Estelle Johnson, but collected and curled the rebound into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Lloyd evened the scoreline in the 26th minute with a rocket from right outside the 18-yard box. Beating the Courage defensive pressure, Raquel Rodriguez sent the ball forward to Lloyd who fired a shot into the right-hand corner of the net to make it 1-1.
The Courage went up 2-1 with a goal by Debinha in the 28th minute. North Carolina Midfielder Cari Roccaro collected the ball from a corner and played in Debinha on the right side of the box, who chipped it into the back of the net.
Kailen Sheridan denied two final chances in the first half coming from Roccaro in the 44th minute and McDonald in the 45th minute.
The second half of play saw Lloyd looking to even it up again in the 57th minute as she sent another rocket on frame. With no Courage defenders closing in on Lloyd, she fired a shot from outside of the 18-yard box, keeping Rowland on her toes who had to make a quick reaction save and punched the ball away.
McDonald scored her second goal of the night in the 81st minute to put the Courage up 3-1. As Debinha went to shoot the ball, her miss-hit fell to the feet of McDonald in front of the goal, and a quick redirection off her foot put the ball into the back of the net.
Sky Blue wasn’t ready to give up as Domi Richardson scored her first NWSL career goal in the 86th minute to make it a 3-2 game. As Elizabeth Eddy was dispossessed of the ball, it rolled towards Richardson just outside of the 18-yard box. Richardson lined up the shot and fired a rocket that pinged off the bottom of the crossbar and landed in the back of the net.
North Carolina’s final chance on goal was denied by Sheridan who stood her ground on Williams close-range shot in the 94th minute.
Sky Blue’s last chance to even the game up came from a free-kick given in the midfield. Lloyd attempted to send it in to the box but was blocked by the Courage defense.
