Sky Blue players Elizabeth Eddy and Nahomi Kawasumi and their loaned clubs came out victorious in their weekend matchups. Eddy played the full 90 in Vittsjö GIK’s 4-0 shutout while Kawasumi made a late appearance in INAC Kobe Leonessa’s 2-1 win.
Kawasumi and INAC Kobe Leonessa battled Nojima Stella Kanagawa Sagamihara of Japan’s Nadeshiko League on Friday, November 6. INAC’s first goal of the day came in the 23rd minute, while Nojima Stella Kanagawa Sagamihara equalized just nine minutes later in the 32nd minute. The score line remained 1-1 going into halftime. INAC Kobe Leonessa wasted no time in the second half and took the lead in the 49th minute. Kawasumi came off the bench in the 90th minute and finished the match at striker. INAC Kobe Leonessa held onto the 2-1 lead until the final whistle, earning three points and maintaining the second place spot on the leaderboard. The Urawa Red Diamonds currently sit atop the table with an eight-point cushion above INAC Kobe Leonessa. With only two more matches to go, Kawasumi and Kobe Leonessa will look to advance their lead over third place NTV Beleza and hold on to second place in the Nadeshiko League.
On Saturday, November 7, Eddy and Vittsjö GIK faced off against KIF Obrero in the Swedish Damallsvenskan. After a tough loss last weekend, Vittsjö GIK entered the match sitting in 5th place on the table. Vittsjö GIK opened the scoring in the 20th minute and netted another in the 38th minute to go up 2-0 at the half. The second 45 remained scoreless until Eddy’s squad found the back of the net in the 81st and 82nd minutes to secure a 4-0 lead. Eddy played at left back for the entirety of the match and helped Vittsjö GIK earn a clean sheet. The win keeps Vittsjö GIK in fifth in the standings with 26 points. With a five-point lead above the sixth place, KIF Obrero, and one matchday remaining in the Damallsvenskan, Vittsjö GIK will finish in fifth place. The team will close out league play this upcoming weekend as they take on Goteborg, who has already secured the league title.
Sky Blue’s loaned players will take to the pitch again this weekend. Kawasumi and INAC Kobe Leonessa will play Cerezo Osaka Sakai on Saturday, November 14, at 11:00 p.m. ET. Evelyne Viens, Kaleigh Riehl, and Paris FC will be back in action this Saturday, November 15, at 8:30 a.m. ET as they take on EA Guingamp. Finally, Eddy and Vittsjö GIK will face Göteborg FC in their final match of the season on Sunday, November 15, at 9:00 a.m. ET.
