Sky Blue FC’s Margaret “Midge” Purce Earns Second Cap in USWNT 2-0 Victory Against the Netherlands

The U.S. Women’s National Team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in their final match of 2020. Midfielder Rose Lavelle scored a goal late in the first half to put the squad up 1-0 at halftime. After subbing on in the 61st minute, midfielder Kristie Mewis added an insurance goal in the 70th minute. The win is the first for the USWNT since March after international play paused for the COVID-19 pandemic. Undefeated in 2020, the USWNT finishes the year with a 9-0-0 record.

Sky Blue FC defender Margaret “Midge” Purce entered the match in the 76th minute for right back Kelley O’Hara. The cap marked Purce’s first minutes with the USWNT in 2020 and her first match with the squad in just over a year since her November 10, 2019 debut.

At right back, Purce helped to keep the shutout for the USWNT while also finding her way into the attack in the 90th minute. Purce won a ball from a Netherlands defender near midfield and took a dribble in the open field. She slotted a perfectly weighted ball to forward Lynn Williams, who one-touched the ball to Alex Morgan. The striker, who subbed into the match at halftime, chipped the ball over the Netherlands keeper and into the back of the net but was ultimately whistled offside by a matter of inches.
